hello we can fly

Today’s lost hour is thanks to Hello We Can Fly.
Hello We Can Fly is a group of illustrators, animators and tech folk based in Belfast, who created interactive kids’ stories.
It’s kinda nice to stumble across an interactive studio that talks mostly about the story, instead of throwing about a jumble of tech-words and acronyms.
To Be […]

Signs that Say What You Want Them To Say and Not Signs that Say What Someone Else Wants You To Say

There is an article in today’s Age about video and photography artist Gillian Wearing. I remember hearing about her work in a class last year. I found her series, ‘Signs that Say What You Want Them To Say and Not Signs that Say What Someone Else Wants You To Say’, where she stopped people on […]

band posters

The graphic design that pops up in the indie music scene occasionally is pretty exciting..The Heads Of State have been one of my favourite studios for a long while. Is their Wilco poster not one of the best band posters you’ve ever seen?
33rpm is another studio doing some beautiful things with ink.

It’s all so […]

australian animations thanks to Auntie

Four Minute Wonders
The above image is a still from the beautiful animation ‘Easily Broken/Silicon Spiders‘, one of the pieces created for the ABC’s Four Minute Wonders. There’s some pretty amazing stuff among the Four Minute Wonders animations. And the resources are good too. It’s pretty interesting to listen to the animators talk about how they […]

other dimensions

For animating in Flash, this is something that I need to remember:
Since the output from flash is square pixels and tv is rectangular the resolution to work in is actually 768×540. (768×540 square pixels is changed to 720×540 rectangular pixels in your post processing or DVD authoring software, if you worked in 720 rather than […]

illustration is everywhere

a nice step-by-step about taking pencil to photoshop.

Odd Todd

Today’s lost hour is thanks to Odd Todd, a series of Flash animations about the joys of looking for a job and the eternal jobseeker question: what’s on TV?
It does seem like sending your resume off via email means you are sending it off into outer space where aliens use it for toilet paper. And […]

The first shot

this is the first shot for my animation. there will be snow involvement, of course. but that’s going to happen through the magic of actionscript.
why is this sucker so tall? it’s so i can pan down. that’s the planned camera move at the moment.
any comments about my pic, both positive or negative, will be met […]

Making Fiends

Today’s lost hour is thanks to ‘Making Fiends‘ the hauntingly beautiful story of Charlotte, who makes friends, and Vendetta, who makes fiends. It’s all done in Flash by Amy Winfrey, who also animated for ‘South Park’.
“Eat vegetables with every meal,
Or your lips will start to peel,
And your eyeballs will fall out,
And your […]

“This story does not start on a boat … “

I am reading “Unpolished Gem” at the moment. It’s a sort-of biography, published by Black Inc, an independent Melbourne-based publisher.
This story tells of a Chinese-Cambodian family settling in Footscray after Cambodia’s Pol Pot years and a first generation Australian figuring out what it all means to grow up somewhere between two cultures.
Alice Pung’s words are […]
