why we write
It seems normal that most people will sit back and experience some doubt about their actions, every once in a while. This definitely applies to blogging, and the act of making the private a little more public. Why do we write, what is the point if no-one reads, am I just being self-obsessed. etc.
I liked this response in one of the comments of a blog I read occassionally, where the author is going through a similar process:
I actually think of blogging or journaling as something sacred. In the religion I grew up in (Hernhutter/Moravian/Evangelische Brudergemeinte) it is a sacred thing to keep a journal (called Lebenslauf/ Life’s course) and to share it. It is very important that you keep track of your daily life and share with others what you have learnt, and how you have seen or missed the divine (whatever that is ) in your life. Others can then see they are not alone in their daily human struggles, and they can learn to avoid mistakes, or learn to see the divine in ways they hadn’t thought of before.
People’s Lebenslauf is read out loud at their funeral; it’s that sacred. The total opposite of narcissism.
A number of times I’ve followed your line of thought. The last time must have been decisive - I haven’t blogged a word since. I like the person you quote. Just not sure I can get over the results of said line of thinking! (And yes, people do read.)
Don’t stop blogging because of me! (Was it something i said?) It’s pretty nice to think of the divine existing in the mundane. It makes all aspects of life, not just blogging, seem a bit more special I reckon.
